2002 GMC Envoy
After a year of absence, as the GMC Jimmy Diamond Edition replaced it in 2001,
the GMC Envoy comes back in 2002 with improved interior and exterior features
and totally replaced the GMC Jimmy. The GMC Envoy was one of the beneficiaries
of the upgrades made by the GM corporations for its SUVs, which also includes
the Cheverolet TrailBlazer and the Oldsmobile Bravada. For 2002, we see a much
improved GMC Envoy, far advance than its GMC Jimmy predecessor.
The 2002 GMC Envoy comes in four trims: SLE, SLE 4WD, SLT, and SLT 4WD. It is
still a four door wagon that can seat up to 5 passengers. For 2002 however, the
new GMC Envoy XL was introduced, offering a longer over-all length, wider interior,
and more interior and exterior amenities. The longer wheelbase provides for two
more seats, making it a 7-seater vehicle. The XL model also comes in four trims,
the same as the base model.
The new GMC Envoy also comes with a new engine, the Vortec 4200, a 4.2 liter
DOHC 24 valve inline 6-cylinder engine. The change was made to provide a simpler
design and better fuel economy, considering that new technologies now enable the
inline type engines to function just as good as the V6 or V8 engines. The 4-speed
automatic transmission was retained, but now without the overdrive button. The
Auto Trac system that engages the all-wheel drive system whenever needed is still
a standard feature for all 4WD models.
The new GMC Envoy also comes more equipped than its predecessor or the previous
GMC Envoys. Standard equipments for the base model includes an AM/FM stereo with
CD player, power windows, dual power outside mirrors, power door locks, and air
conditioning. Safety features are complete with ABS brakes, side impact airbags,
passenger depowered airbags, driver depowered airbag, and front and rear head
restraint. Premium models would add the four wheel drive and leather seats and
details in the list of standard equipments.
